ZEST for dry eye

An in-office eyelid cleaning treatment used by some clinics to remove debris and biofilm from the lid margins.

What is ZEST?

ZEST, often short for Zocular Eyelid System Treatment, is an eyelid-margin cleaning procedure used in some dry eye and blepharitis care plans. It is commonly discussed as a lid hygiene treatment rather than a gland heating procedure.

How it works

A clinician applies a treatment product and cleans the eyelid margin to remove debris, buildup, and biofilm. It may be paired with home eyelid hygiene or other dry eye treatments.

Potential benefits

  • Remove eyelid debris and buildup
  • Support blepharitis and lid hygiene management
  • Complement broader dry eye treatment plans

Risks and limitations

  • Temporary stinging, redness, irritation, or tenderness may occur
  • Benefits may be temporary without ongoing lid hygiene
  • It does not treat every cause of dry eye

Questions to ask a clinic

Is ZEST being recommended for blepharitis, Demodex, meibomian gland dysfunction, or another finding?

What home lid hygiene should I continue after treatment?

What findings from my eye examination support this treatment?

What alternatives should I consider first?

How will we measure whether it is helping?

What will the total treatment and follow-up cost be?
